What is kirtan?

Kirtan is singing together. The band sings a short line of a mantra, and everyone in the room sings it back. The words are a few Sanskrit names and phrases, repeated many times, so most people are singing along within a minute or two. A song might start as a whisper, build into a joyful, full-voiced roar, and then settle back into silence.

The word comes from Sanskrit kīrtana, which means “narrating, reciting, telling.” It’s a soulful live musical adventure that spans the whole range of emotions and intensities, held with mindfulness. We call to you with our musical ideas and invite you to respond in whichever way moves you: meditate, sing, play, or dance the names of the divine within yourself and in our circle.

Our approach is modern, with playfulness, intentionality and improvisation as major themes. We fuse the tradition with Western ingredients like folk, rock, jazz, funk and reggae.

Who it’s for: everyone. We aspire in our practice as mystics to seek a truth beyond any doctrine, philosophy, or concept. Yet, we recognize the wisdom of all traditions. We are inclusive, believe foremost in the power of love and harmony, and disavow dogma.

What an evening looks like

  • 6:00–8:15 pm: Kirtan with Supersonic Soul Circle
  • Connection, prasad and transition: a break to stretch, meet people and share prasad (a blessed snack offered to everyone)
  • 8:45–10:00 pm: Ecstatic dance with a guest DJ. Ecstatic dance is a safe container for movement, expression and embodiment, with an intentional playlist that follows a meaningful arc. No steps to learn: let the music move you.

Questions

I’ve never been to a kirtan. Is it OK to come?

Yes, please! Most people come for the first time knowing nothing. The band sings each line first and you sing it back, so there’s nothing to learn ahead of time. Singing is optional: you can listen, hum, clap or just sit with your eyes closed.

Do I need to know the words or sing well?

No. The mantras are short and repeat many times, and nobody is listening to your voice but you. If you’d like a preview, the words to every mantra we sing are on our Mantras page.

Is kirtan religious? Do I have to be Hindu?

You don’t need to hold any belief to take part. Kirtan comes from India’s devotional traditions, and we honor that, but we aspire to seek a truth beyond any doctrine, while remaining True to our musical selves and honoring our own histories and paths. We are inclusive, believe foremost in the power of love and harmony, and disavow dogma.

How much does it cost?

Tickets are a $25–45 sliding scale: pay what fits your situation. We want to keep this practice accessible. Buy online through Perennial Yoga (the “Get tickets” button above) or at the door.

We also offer a seva (volunteer) exchange: we almost always need help with setup, teardown and event support. Message us on Facebook if you’d like to help.

Can I come just for the kirtan, or just for the dance?

Yes. Come for either part: kirtan starts at 6 pm and ecstatic dance at about 8:45 pm. We do recommend the full experience, though, for optimal soul squeakiness.

What should I bring or wear?

Just comfortable clothes you can sit and move in, and a water bottle. Perennial provides cushions and blankets, and chairs too.

How often do you hold kirtan?

About once a month (sometimes more, sometimes less) at Perennial Yoga in Fitchburg, plus the occasional pop-up kirtan. See every date on our Shows page or join the email list.

Where do I park?

There’s parking alongside the building and in the underground parking garage.
